PostHeaderIcon Convenient Ideas to Spend

Does our society thrive on convenience? We have convenience stores, fast food restaurants, microwaves, online stores, online payday loan lenders, automatic timers on our coffee pots, credit cards, that’s convenient isn’t it? Everything created today, is for our so called convenience. Here in America we live in a culture of facility and excessiveness, distracted or unconscious of worldly problems and even more so close to home. So many people struggle on a daily basis to make ends meet. In some cultures and poor countries, they don’t even know what electricity is, or struggle to find clean water to drink. We are blessed and lucky indeed, and sometimes we forget how so.

I enjoy my luxuries, many people might not consider having a blanket or electricity and a stove a luxury, but having lived without them, one gets a different idea of what is considered luxury. Spending a year in Africa changed my outlook on the world and especially America. If for anything, it certainly made me appreciate what I have even more, but it also made me realize that I was living in excess. Since I have returned from that trip, I am a changed person forever, and I have made some drastic changes in the way I live my life. I don’t concern myself with unnecessary frivolous items anymore, and I have tried to be helpful in my own community, helping people that have more of a need than I do. It’s a personal choice, and not one that everyone is prepared to embark on. Sometimes you have to put your blinders up and just focus your own personal life, there are terrible things happening all over the world, and one person alone cannot possibly change that. Doing something close to home, in your community can help towards the greater good. It should be in everyone’s interest to do some form of volunteer if you have extra time, especially in your own back yard to help out in some way. Life is hectic and busy and not everyone can dedicate hours of their precious time outside of their own lives. But sometimes prioritizing can change things and make room for other things.

Next time you turn on your stove, take chicken out of the fridge, think about how some people still hunt for their food. Put yourself in their shoes for a minute and see if it changes how you feel. Next time you throw out a plate of left over, think of how hungry that homeless person on the corner of the street may be and maybe you’ll think twice about wasting. Why not put that food aside and make some plates and bring them to the local homeless that might be in need. Any small gesture you make will be recognized. There is peace in giving, and that small gesture could make someone’s day.
